Why paint? "As a child I was very attuned to the natural world; my father introduced me to woods, fields, and streams. I've always had a deep love for and wonder of those things, and that extends to the animal world. As an artist, I am able to revel in the dappled sunlight and deep shadow, in comparing the texture and shape of everything, and enjoying the utterly delightful expressions and feelings of the animals I'm painting, Beyond that though, I feel a need to record what's here, and to try to impart the importance of the human response to nature. Things have changed so much since I was a child, and will continue to change, of course, but by painting I am able to capture a moment in the woods, or the innocence of a newborn animal. My hope is that we will take better care of the natural world and value it more, but in case we don't, someday, in what I hope is not a bleak distant future, those who are present might look on these things I and others have painted and be transported back to the overwhelming beauty of what was, as interpreted by the artists living in those moments."
